Today I am FINALLY sharing something I have been talking about for the last year it seems…fridge organization! I will be sharing all what we use & how I keep it easy! Each year in the beginning of the year I pick out organization projects I want to tackle for that year. I then work on them during the winter months so we can enjoy all the sunshine during the summer months. Our nice weather is far too short here in the Midwest! One of my top organizing projects for last year was to get my fridge in order. We buy + eat A TON of fresh product each week and if I am not diligent in making sure I remember what is in the fridge, without doubt something is getting thrown out that week. This was one of my main motivating factors behind doing this, right behind I LIVE for every space of my life to be neat, clean & organized! Organized spaces give me LIFE ya’ll! Anyway, back to my produce! When buying so much, it can get really hard to keep track of in the fridge. We live in a house that was built in the 90’s & this fridge is the original refrigerator. It is a Sub-Zero, but a very old one so mama doesn’t have 6 feet of fridge bliss like my fellow newer Sub-Zero owners! This baby is NARROW! So if any of you have a side by side fridge and space is a struggle like it is for me, this post is for you! I knew I needed to be extra organized because of having so much less space + the overload of produce I buy each week.
The first thing you want to do is measure your fridge shelving! I was actually really surprised (& happy) how well everything fit-even in my super old fridge! Once I had my measurements I went and started putting difference pieces together. I added it all to my cart and then went back and checked the measurements to make sure it would all fit right. I don’t have a store near me so I did it online and honestly found it to be easier than being in store trying to measure everything in an isle! Everything I got is linked above! (Two of the large pantry bins fit in perfectly on the shelf-I love those for lemons + limes) You can buy pre-made sets but I found that it was more cost savvy to make my own bundle that worked for me so I didn’t have any left over pieces that I couldn’t use. I love the water jug for diffused water, but during the winter months I have taken that out and use that space for left over containers, the big spinach containers ect!
This post is way over due, but I waited a bit to share this post because I really wanted to wait and give my honest feedback about having a system before sharing about it. I remember my husband was a bit cautious about it when I first did it and kinda just gave me one of those eye rolls & under his breath said how this will never work. I was a bit worried at first how everything would fit into the bins ect, but after almost a year of having it I can tell you that we all LOVE IT! I love that I can now SEE everything I have and nothing gets buried behind. Plus I have noticed so much less waste + I feel so much happier when I open the fridge doors.
I grocery shop once a week and before I leave to go the store I go through and clean out the fridge. I pull out any old left overs + expired food. I like doing it this way because then I go to the grocery store knowing exactly what I have left in the fridge to avoid re buying anything I don’t need. I also have a clean fridge ready for when I get home with all the week’s groceries. Meal planning isn’t for everyone, but if you cook a lot at home (or want to start) meal planning is where it’s at! I make a list on Sunday morning before heading to the store and get everything I need for that week. I usually make a list of about 4 meals for the week. I always make enough so there are left over’s for the following day so I usually only end up cooking dinner 4-5 nights a week. We love Chipotle in our house so usually one night of the weekend we will eat there so it saves me from having to cook a meal! We usually eat there on Saturday’s because Saturday’s are cleaning day in our home and I cannot bear to use the kitchen after I spent all morning cleaning it… anyone else like that??
Anyway! I hope you found this post helpful or maybe just gave you the inspiration to tackle a space you have been wanting to tackle for awhile!
Below are all the organizers I use. I have been really happy with the quality + the price point was good too! Next up is my master bath (I’ll share a whole post once it is finished) and my PANTRY! That is a huge project and I am so ready to tackle it! I am literally giddy about sharing that once it’s done! 🙂
